Dean's Message

I am delighted to welcome all new students and staff members to the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI). You are now a part of the UWI family. As you begin this journey, please take time to reflect on why you are here and how you will make the best use of this opportunity. You have gained admission to the premier tertiary education institution in the Caribbean and unquestionably the top health care training facility in the region. Our research has informed government policies, especially in the area of health management, over a long period of time.

You have come to the UWI at an interesting time. We are just one year into the new strategic planning cycle. This plan defines the attributes desirable in a UWI graduate by 2012. Those of you who have joined the 5-year MB BS programme will still be undergraduate students at this time; others will have either left the institution or have moved on to Graduate studies. The Faculty of Medical Sciences is committed to ensure that you graduate as critical thinkers and problems solvers who are career ready and articulate. Through ongoing curricular review and quality assurance measures we shall ensure that our programmes are geared towards creating the qualities outlined in our strategic plan. We are committed to create an atmosphere that encourages excellence in all we do; an important part of this is the creation of an environment which nurtures accountability.
