The Medical Library, U.W.I. Mona was established in 1973, and is situated on the Hospital Ring Road. This Library serves the staff and students of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, all other eligible library members of the University as well as local health Personnel.
Orientation tours and Bibliographic Instruction are organized for all new students, and are also available on request.
On demand from users, the library provides literature searches from different databases, and also helps in verifying citations.
Photocopying machines are available in the Medical Library. Photocopy cards may be purchased at the Circulation Desk, and a refundable deposit is included in the cost of the cards. Users are expected to comply with copyright regulations when copying.
The H.D. Hopwood Medical Education Computer Center (HMECC) situated on the second floor, is equipped with 40 multimedia workstations. Some stations are equipped with DVD, others with CD-ROM drives, multimedia educational software, videotapes, viewing facilities, CDROM towers, printers, servers and UPS are available. A digital video camera and editor, a scanner and CD writer to produce local educational material is also available. HMECC is designed to be a key learning resource for the Faculty of Medical Sciences, with the development of a web-based teaching and learning laboratory.
The MEDCARIB Network Project, established in 1990, is a sub-regional network within BIREME (Latin American and Caribbean Health Information System). BIREME coordinates the activities of all the centers from Latin America and the Caribbean. Sixteen English-speaking Caribbean countries and Suriname participate in the MEDCARIB network, and the Medical Library, UWI, Mona is the regional coordinating center. The Medical Library is the Regional Coordinating Center for the MEDCARIB Network.
The MEDCARIB Database contains approximately 15,000 entries on health literature in the Caribbean from the 17th century to the present. This database is available on the Internet.

The Library has also established a University of the West Indies, Faculty of Medical Sciences Clinical Digital Library. This project was done in conjunction with the School of Library & Information Studies at the University of Alabama, and the University of North Texas.

The Library is closed on Public and University Holidays throughout the year, on the Saturday during the Easter Weekend and before Independence Day, at noon* on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.2004
